news and Square with four circles, New Haven Site Projects is vigorously preparing for our 2010 installation by Felice Varini. An 85-ft tall, multi-surface painting, Square with four circles is our most ambitious project to date and the first outdoor public artwork in the United States by Varini. Installation will begin May 23th; opening ceremonies will be June 4th! The execution of the artwork will be a performance piece in itself. The installation will offer a unique opportunity to observe the artist’s process and the evolution of the artwork. Varini begins his process at night, when the reverse of the geometric figure is projected into the darkened space. Once the outlines are drawn in place by the artist's team, local apprentices begin to fill-in the color around the site. The artwork will be on view for a year. During that period, Site Projects will offer a yearlong series of programs that connect art, architecture, math and technology. Varini’s design will transform the pedestrian passage and the iconic Temple Street parking garage and will change dynamic of Temple Plaza itself. The artwork will be contiguous, not only to the New Haven Green, but also to the Shubert Theater and to the popular restaurant Zinc. Felice Varini uses the buildings, spaces and functions of the site as his medium and as determinants of his designs. Square with four circles will not only be a world-class art installation, but, thanks to a rich array of supporting programs, an occasion for welcoming the world to New Haven. Mark your calendars and join us for a memorable public art experience! |
