| Assessing Progress | ||||||||||
| Students should be able to follow the directions necessary
to complete the exercise. This includes being able to use scissors, and
follow instructions. It helps to follow these rules. 1. Cut the outline border of the large square on Side A. 2. Flip it over. Fold the corners so that they line up with the edge of the square graphic. The result? A cool little folding exercise thing that looks pretty neat and you can take it home and make your folks or parental guardians ask, "What on earth is that?" You can punch a hole in it, put a string through it, and it becomes an ornament. |

Biographical Information
about Ian Applegate |
||||||||||
New Haven native and Wilbur Cross High School alum Ian Applegate is an animator, illustrator, award-winning filmmaker and inventor who translates witty and cartoon-like abstractions of his imagination into drawings, books, films, games and inventions. Applegate’s works combine art, education, digital media, and technology with the intention of establishing “a better life for our communities with a balance between group effort and self-development.” In 2008, he designed a 30 kilowatt solar electrical system and managed the installation on-site at Saybrook Point Inn and Marina. He later designed a photovoltaic solar electrical workbook and board game to teach photovoltaic system design (2009) at The Foote School in New Haven, as well as working with administrators at the John Dorr Nature Center as part of the Horace Mann School’s initiative to develop academic resources in clean energy education. He has worked as a installer for solar panels and is a journeyman electrician. Through undergraduate courses taken at Yale University and later at SUNY Purchase, he cultivated his skills and his communitarian ideas, built a local information website for New Haven, and has organized mural painting projects through “Healthy Neighbors,” a group sponsored by the Yale School of Nursing. He is a frequent presenter at the Pecha Kucka New Haven events. He also volunteers at several local non-profit organizations and has worked as an instructor periodically in local schools and after school enrichment programs. |
